  • Overview

    The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse is a skilled health care provider and has successfully completed an organized program of nursing education that certifies the nurse for an advanced practice role as an APRN in pediatrics.  As an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, the APRN will manage the care of pediatric patients with shared responsibilities in both the Division of Rheumatology and the Division of Infectious Diseases under the medical supervision of the supervising Physician. This position is additionally involved in education and consultation at various levels and is responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the UAMS Department of Pediatrics and Divisions of Rheumatology and Infectious Diseases.  This APRN also interacts closely with other peer APRNS, specialty nurses, administrative staff, support staff, and other health care workers on a continual basis.

    Responsibilities

    70% Clinical Practice

    • Gathers information systematically and skillfully from all sources for both new and established patients:  perinatal and past medical history, diagnostic tests, comprehensive physical examination, behavioral, developmental, psychosocial assessments, differentiating between normal and abnormal variations for all body systems and accurately interpreting diagnostic tests.
    • Utilizes critical thinking and the nursing process in the assessment and identification of patient/family long and short-term physical, psychological, educational and cultural needs for assigned patient populations.
    • Provides ongoing and follow-up care and patient/family education.
    • Accurately interprets health assessment data and applies findings in directing patient care.
    • Utilizes knowledge and expertise when planning long and short-term care, including appropriate pharmacologic and diagnostic treatments as needed.
    • Documents all health data and plan of care and care according to policy.
    • Evaluations patient/family response to the plan of care through systematic follow-up.
    • Documentation of the patient/family outcomes, reassessing and modifying the plan as needed to achieve health goals.
    • Accurately completes all billing forms, including diagnostic (ICD-9) and treatment (CPT) codes, based on federal and state laws in a timely manner.
    • Communicates with referring physicians, allied health providers and hospital staff as appropriate.

    • Demonstrates effective delegation skills for patient care to other members of the health care team and ensures task completion.
    • Demonstrates self-directed and purposeful behavior in seeking necessary knowledge and skills to develop and maintain competency and enhance career goals.
    • Maintains and expands clinical and professional expertise by completing a minimum of 8 contact hours per year of appropriate continuing education (e.g. in-services, journals, workshops, etc.) related to current practice area and role responsibilities
    • Uses mentoring and role modeling skills to promote positive patient outcomes and professionalism.
    • Shares knowledge and expertise with nursing staff and other members of the health care team.

    Qualifications

    Master’s in Nursing.  Current APRN license and RN license; national certification as an APRN in Pediatrics.  Current prescriptive authority certification granted by the ABSN in accordance with all state and federal laws.  Demonstrates excellent communication (written and oral), problem-solving, leadership, and collaborative skills.  Strong patient advocacy and patient education skills.  High level of autonomous practice skills and dominance of nurse-initiated treatment regimens within the practice setting.  Ability to communicate and interpret complex written and verbal messages.  Complex reasoning, judgment, problem solving and calculations required.
