    Schedule: Full-Time, 7:30a-4:00p Monday-Friday (Subject to Change)


    The RN Behavioral Emergency Response Team Lead Specialty Nurse (under general direction) has authority, responsibility and accountability for facilitating an interprofessional Behavioral Response Team. The Behavioral Response Team Lead will be responsible for the development and sustainment of a 24/7 response team that responds to escalating undesired behavior by a patient, family member, or visitor on the UAMS main campus. In addition, the team lead will be responsible for ensuring UAMS meets the Joint Commission’s 7 steps to addressing workplace violence:

    1. Clearly define workplace violence, and put violence and abuse reporting systems into place
    2. Capture and properly track reports of workplace violence from various sources
    3. Provide follow-up and support to workplace violence victims
    4. Review each instance of workplace violence, and determine what factors contributed to it
    5. Develop quality improvement initiatives to prevent workplace violence
    6. Train all staff in de-escalation, self-defense, and emergency code response
    7. Evaluate workplace violence reduction initiatives

    Staff Development:

    • Development and sustainment of education/training curriculum for all UAMS main campus employees related to undesired behavior by a patient, family member, or visitor. Should include different levels of training determined by level of risk.
    • Develop and annually evaluate a process (i.e. procedures, algorithms) that clearly instructs employees on what steps to take when a patient, family member, or employee on the UAMS campus exhibits undesired behavior using a tiered approach.
    • Assist staff to maintain current knowledge and competence in areas of de-escalation and behavioral response
    • Educate staff on the behavioral response team process/procedures


    • Survey workforce to understand concerns, frequency of incidents, perceptions of security, and suggested actions to improve security.
    • Development and annual evaluation of policies that clearly articulate UAMS’s stance related to undesired behavior (i.e. zero tolerance policy) and expectations for reporting (i.e. safety intelligence).

    Direct Patient Care:

    • Recommendations of treatment and/or interventions based on clinical assessment

    Special Knowledge/Skills / Management and Leadership Activities: 

    • Data collection/ Tracking/Surveillance
    • Assist in development and/or revision of policy/procedure/protocols as needed regarding emergency behavioral response
    • Participates in committee work
    • Manages/coordinates programs/projects related to emergency behavioral response
    • Ability to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities
    • Uses sound judgement and adheres to Code of Ethics and Business Standards
    • Champions new initiatives; acts as a catalyst for change and manages implementation effectively
    • Identifies goals and vision for the team
    • Exemplary written and oral communication skills


    Required Qualifications: 

    • Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program with Bachelor’s Degree or higher in nursing or other health related field
    • Current RN licensure in state of Arkansas
    • >3 years in nursing experience
    • Strong leadership skills, ability to manage conflict in a variety of situations
    • Strong customer service orientation
    • Superior organizational skills
    • Advanced communication, leadership and interpersonal skills
    • Demonstrated ability to align and motivate key process stakeholders, including nurses, physicians, and other clinical/administrative staff
    • Strong skills in MS Office and database software
    • Experience in Medical Record System
    • Experience in Clinical Documentation
    • Experience in Quality Monitoring and Analysis
    • Knowledgeable in behavioral de-escalation principles and guidelines
    • Demonstrated proficiency in presentation/teaching skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Mental health background with minimum two years practice with inpatient psychiatric populations
    • Program/project leadership with demonstrated outcomes
    • Doctoral preparation
    • Current experience in acute care population or psychiatric population in an academic medical center
    • Knowledge in Epic Medical Record System
    • Internal candidate familiar with the organization
